The various meanings of hustle

What does the word ”hustle” mean to you? Is it about how busy you are, does it imply something more lurid and illegal or does it mean taking yourself to an uncomfortable mental state and doing extra action to attain your goals?

The infamous Urban dictionary describes Hustle

Anythin you need to do to make money... be it sellin cars, drugs, ya body. If you makin money, you hustlin.

I been workin two jobs, tryna stay on my hustle and make this money, na mean?

Wow – well I certainly do not support selling drugs or “ya body” however there is a strong signal that we should explore further. The signal it sends is in the first part of the description “Anythin you need to make money” – (clearly leaving a “g” off anything just proves how much of a hurry they are in!) The clear message is to be innovative and persistent (less street hustle language and more corporate language for the same thing).

Sure we understand the "hustle and bustle" of life expression but does this simply imply being busy? Does all this activity indicate a friction in life that is dealing with many things and not contributing to our broader goals?

Why you should hustle in business and life

Contrary to popular opinion, the hustle is not a dance step – it’s an old business procedure
— Fran Lebowitz

The risk and reward ratio of through life and business is real. We see investment houses make their living in this area. They understand the opportunity from the startup company before them and create a risk and reward calculation. They know and understand in most cases they will lose their money and yet the few that do win will return a much bigger return and so can off-set their prior investment losses.

  • In life you can go far by adopting the correct body posture and demonstrate confidence to overcome socially uncomfortable situations. Consider a director or sales manager, they will often act with confidence to project trust worthiness. That’s a form of hustle!

There are situations that occur out of our control. The situations and impacts can come from a number of unique scenarios from economic, to political, social or technological areas. Within a crisis comes opportunity, this is when the hustler mindset can pivot in business scenarios to take commercial advantage of new market opportunity. In life it also means new experiences can be explored.

The hustler has a “do and win” attitude , is that not what everyone wants in life and business?

Hustle from the streets

It’s not something you ‘learn’ like you would accounting or public speaking. It’s more a state-of-mind that develops—or doesn’t develop.

Adopt The characteristics of a startup

A brand new business creates an image of high positive action, fast moving and high stakes decisions. These attributes we see in entrepreneurs and high driven leaders from startups to large multinational organizations. I think there is strong merit to adopt some of their characteristics to help you understand the areas where you need to develop your hustle mindset.

  • Vision and ambition is clear in these people
  • Gut instinct and intuition is demonstrated in these people
  • Try again is the war cry of the driven person, they will not give up
  • Imagination and solutions based creativity are the clear ideas and information they seek
  • Tenacity in a wide range of business scenarios is an attribute to a leaders success
  • Distinctive in the way they act, look or behave are often seen in strong leaders and brands.

The above bullets are common traits found within high performers:- These are the traits to bring to your hustle.

How to introduce hustle

What you lack in talent can be made up with desire, hustle and giving 110% all the time
— Don Zimmer

Your mindset of hustle is important but this refers to a shift of an attitude to push your mind away from its comfort zone and into a calculated risk area. This does not mean you should adopt any unethical, illegal behaviors but a more “street” like attitude to opportunities will help.

Create clear scope and an acceptable culture to allow local autonomy and decision making at all levels within a business. New ideas, skills and opportunity may come at a time to be maximized and provide true business and customer value through a short time hustle activity. This could be anything from a short term project, single action or mini marketing campaign.

Be open to new skills and career changes. The cumulative aggregation of experience and broad skills will provide a wider foundation to pivot and adopt to a rapidly changing work environment.

Encourage a review of process’s in business and life. Adopting a hustler mindset may open doors to embrace anything from a life hack in cooking to providing industry leading customer service for specific customer profiles.

The key hustle metrics

  1. Create a program of consistent cold calling in your marketing and sales operations for all members in these departments.

  2. Have a metric to find “low hanging fruit” opportunities within your business.

  3. Regular PEST reviews to identify new opportunities (Political, Economic,Social,Technology)

  4. Target a number of new people you will meet in personal life.

  5. Review productivity hours and replace low productive/low result activities with trial hustle actions and measure the impact.

Personal experiences

Anyone that has read my bio will see a period of time in my life when I had the fortune to travel the world for a few years. During this time I fine-tuned my own hustle skills. I had to negotiate, innovate, be creative and work very hard to establish some climb or travel goals. These experiences gathered across the globe proved very important when operating within a corporate environment.

I recall the times when as a marketing director a “hot sales lead” was generated and the respective sales manager showed zero interest in pursuit of a “relative low value deal”. I used hustle to talk the case through with the owner of the company and went out myself and closed the deal. We made as much money from that one single forklift truck sale as the sales manager made in an average of 2 sales. The point was proven and performance and attitudes changed around the business.

Another time when I operated as a sales manager for one of the largest consultancy firms in the world, I had an appointment cancelled at the last moment and no phone connection to make calls. Instead of driving home early as would have been permitted, I simply popped into a few business receptions. One random meeting with a senior manager lead later to a meeting and sales deal with a large UK retail company.

I have several other great experiences of hustle action with JAMSO!

For many Europeans, hustle brings an USA East Coast image of busy New York and fast deals

  • The understanding of the word hustle is in my view slightly negative, especially in the UK and parts of Europe, Hustle seems to be more acceptable in New York and Las Vegas than the streets and companies of Berlin or Helsinki so depending on where in the world you are reading this article I appreciate and respect your acceptance or reservations around the concept of hustle.

Rebranding hustle

  • Generating your success in life and business comes through having a small dose of luck, the correct level of qualifications and the hard work to make it all happen. These points you and I have read before, the reality behind hustle is a positive attitude to push through any obstacle and reach your desired goal. It refers to the fire in your belly, the quick thinking reactions to situations and truck load of hard solid work, surely the word hustle now needs a rebrand?
